Tottenham join Leeds in race for Brentford star amid tempting price drop

Tottenham have joined Leeds United in the hunt for exit-bound Brentford winger Said Benrahma, whose price will likely decrease, according to a report.

The Algerian scored contributed to 26 Championship goals to help his side reach the play-off final this season. Indeed, he was part of the Bees’ famed front three that netted 58 times in the second tier.

Previous reports claimed Chelsea are keen on the 24-year-old but the Daily Mirror now says Leeds have entered the race.

Marcelo Bielsa’s men went one step further than Brentford and secured promotion, and are now looking to strengthen in a bid to impress in the top flight.

What’s more, the newspaper claims the Whites are “pushing hard” for his signature. They are even willing to pay up to £25million for the winger.

However, a separate report from the paper claims Spurs have also registered interest. That report claims the north London side are keen knowing his price will likely drop to around £16million.

Brentford had initially wanted their £25million but could settle for £9million less knowing that they will still earn huge profit from the £2.7million it cost to sign Benrahma from Nice in 2018.

As for Tottenham, the price drop matches their ambitions not to spend heavily this summer. Boss Jose Mourinho previously promised not to spend “rivers of money” due to the financial impact of the pandemic.

What’s more, they took out a £175million Bank of England loan to help them through the crisis. They also furloughed non-playing staff before reversing the decision under public pressure.

TOTTENHAM’S SPENDING PLAN MAPPED OUT?

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg

The shape of Tottenham’s spending could have been mapped out with their acquisition of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg from Southampton.

Reports claimed Spurs are close to signing the Denmark midfielder, 25, for £15million.

As part of the deal, however, Tottenahm full-back Kyle Walker-Peters will sign a permanent £12million deal on the south coast.

The England Under-21 international impressed on his half-season loan at Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side.
