A key Tottenham performer could soon face a difficult decision after the latest reports claimed his former club are considering activating his buy-back clause.
Tottenham have found their groove under Jose Mourinho following a difficult start to life last year.
The Portuguese has brought out the best of deadly duo Harry Kane and Son Heung-min. Furthermore, Tanguy Ndombele has been transformed from misfit to maestro.
A crucial component behind Spurs’ resurgence came via Mourinho’s transfer dealings in the summer.
Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has fitted in seamlessly and provided bite and tenacity in the engine room.
Spanish left-back Sergio Reguilon has also been a revelation. Five assists have already been notched in all competitions to go along with a series of solid defensive displays.
The ex-Real Madrid star is already a fans favourite in North London, though the latest reports suggest his stay may not be a long one.
Spanish outlet Sport (via Goal) reveal that Los Blancos are ‘considering triggering a clause to bring the defender back.’
The clause was inserted into Reguilon’s contract upon signing for Tottenham, and ensures a €45 million (£40m) must be accepted – providing it is made within two years of his initial move.
Though that figure would represent an increase on Spurs’ initial outlay, his stellar performances would surely see him valued higher on the free market.
Should such an offer be made, the decision on whether to return back to Spain will be down to Reguilon.
Tottenham urged to reject ‘disrespectful’ Eriksen
Meanwhile, Former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan has taken a swipe at Christian Eriksen and warned Tottenham not to re-sign the midfielder.
Eriksen, 28, spent six and a half seasons with Spurs before leaving for Inter Milan in January 2020. He left under a cloud after making it clear six months before his departure that he wanted ‘a new challenge’.
The Denmark international was linked with Real Madrid but nothing materialised and he eventually headed to the San Siro. Having been a stalwart for Spurs since 2013, the manner of his exit still rankles with many.
He appeared to ‘down tools’ over the final months of his time in north London. Having been a regular starter for so many years, he was used off the bench in half his appearances.
