Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has his sights set on securing a January agreement to bring a Newcastle winger north of the border.
The Gers have made a superb start to their SPL campaign, currently sitting nine points clear of bitter rivals Celtic who have two games in hand.
Manager Gerrard has been a frequent buyer from the English game during his time with the club, and the latest report reveals his interest in Magpies forward Jacob Murphy.
Murphy, 25, had fallen down the pecking order at St. James Park under Steve Bruce.
A successful loan spell in the Championship with Sheffield Wednesday materialised last season, leading to rare opportunities in the Premier League this campaign.
Murphy notched a late equaliser versus Wolves last week, though according to the Daily Record (citing The Chronicle), his return to the fore has not yet yielded progress in his quests for a new contract.
Murphy is set to become a free agent at the season’s end, and Newcastle are described as being ‘desperate not to lose him on a free’.
Gerrard is said to be ‘keeping a close eye’ on his contract developments. Should no progress be made, Rangers will reportedly seek to ‘make a pre-contract move for him in January’.
Bruce aiming for tactical change
Meanwhile, Steve Bruce claims that Newcastle are trying to play a “more expansive” style of soccer, but they are “comfortable” with their current way of playing.
Newcastle have stood out for their lack of possession under Bruce, but still managed to overcome Everton when they met on Sunday.
The Magpies had just 37 per cent of the ball, but a brace from Callum Wilson saw them become the second team to beat the Toffees this season. A consolation from Dominic Calvert-Lewin in stoppage time prompted some Newcastle nerves, but they held on.
Hence, Bruce got the better of Carlo Ancelotti, even if the Everton boss was unable to call on some of his regular starters.
After the game, Bruce shed light on his tactical approach.
