Mourinho’s wrath: Three Spurs stars must buck up their ideas after Chelsea display – opinion

Jose Mourinho may have come away from Stamford Bridge feeling slightly disappointed on Sunday after Tottenham were unable to secure three points. Whilst the visitors did well to hold Chelsea to a draw, the ex-Blues boss was likely hoping for more.

The point was enough to send Spurs back to the top of the table, where they jumped ahead of Liverpool on goal difference. However, despite leading the pack, Mourinho has picked out several players who he wasn’t best pleased with during the clash with his former side.

Mourinho post-match comments

Whilst the manager was full of praise of Joe Rodon on his first start for Spurs, he pointed the finger at his centre-back partner. Eric Dier has been forced to step up to the plate with Toby Alderweireld currently sidelined due to a groin injury. But his shift against Chelsea clearly didn’t wow Mourinho.

“Dier made more mistakes than him [Rodon], especially in ball possession,” he said in his latest press conference.

Whilst this is probably just a blip on his radar, Dier cannot afford to slip up with the likes of Rodon lurking for his chance in the team. Japhet Tanganga is also vying for his chance to impress the manager – no spot is guaranteed in terms of Mourinho’s defence this season.

A lot of Spurs players were neutralised during the Stamford Bridge match, but two players in particular who were especially disappointing were Steven Bergwijn and Moussa Sissoko.

According to Sofascore, neither player managed to conjure up a single cross or key pass and they lost possession 21 times between them. Aside from Bergwijn’s early attempt, he didn’t do much to trouble Chelsea for the rest of the match.

The pair can’t afford to become complacent as Mourinho has a well-stocked roster this term and he could deploy any of Lucas Moura, Erik Lamela and Gareth Bale on the wing whilst he has Harry Winks pushing for a starting role in midfield.

Spurs will certainly be the team to watch for any further shock Mourinho decisions as they establish themselves as title challengers.
