Man Utd told why sale of struggling star would prove a costly mistake

Louis Saha has told Anthony Martial to get “selfish” in a bid to end his scoring drought – and has offered a strong reason why his sale this summer would be a huge mistake.

The Frenchman netted 23 goals last season – by far the most prolific goalscoring season of his career. However, it’s been a different story this time around with Martial scoring just seven times in 33 games. Indeed, Martial looks low on confidence of late, having not registered a goal since his double in the 9-0 drubbing of Southampton.

However, Saha insists all is not lost and he’s urged his countryman to “become obsessed with scoring” in a bid to lift his goals ratio.

“I think he’s a top player, that’s for sure. I think when you’re a No.9 and you’re not scoring, it’s difficult as people are only asking you to score goals. That’s it,” he told talkSPORT.

“When you’re not doing it you’re going to be criticised. You need to be strong and really believe. You also need to be selfish and adopt a style of play that you really fancy.

“This is why he’s getting the criticism. It’s not about his talent or desire because he has that I’m sure.

“It his expression sometimes. Having that obsession with scoring goals makes it easier because people say he’s been unlucky but you can see when he’s in his comfort zone people get on his back.”

With speculation suggesting Martial could be sold by United, Saha is adamant the Red Devils would rue cashing in on him.

“I really don’t think he’s a player Man United should let go because he can be that player who completes the striking force as he’s unique in the way he plays.

“When you’re not scoring you need to be obsessed with scoring goals and I think sometimes he doesn’t show that.”

Solskjaer backing for Martial

Speaking last month, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has backed his No 9 to soon return to form in front of goal.

“Everyone has a bad patch, Solskjaer said. “Anthony knows what we want and he’s working really hard to do well for the team – that’s what’s pleasing me,” Solskjaer said.

“I see him every day in training. He’s not going to sit down and wait for things to happen. He knows he’ll have to make it happen himself.

“We encourage him, we coach him and we know he’s got the quality and class. Everyone goes through a difficult patch at times. I think we saw he’s working harder and that’s the main thing.”
