Man City could be about to ‘pounce’ after one of the world’s leading defenders hit a roadblock regarding a contract extension with his current club.
City crashed back down to earth this campaign, amassing just 81 league points after averaging 99 over the prior two seasons.
The main cause of their issues stemmed from their defence, further hampered by Aymeric Laporte’s untimely injury.
Pep Guardiola is reportedly keen to address the situation, and a move for a Liverpool-linked centre-half was recently touted.
However, the latest report from The Sun (who cite Bild) suggest the Spaniard may seek to resolve his issues through former club Bayern Munich.
David Alaba spent the bulk of his career at left-back, but has seamlessly transitioned into the centre-back role this season.
The switch provided the opening for left-back Alphonso Davies to shine, and the duo struck up a sublime left-sided partnership.
That may be about to end, however, with news of Alaba hitting an impasse over a new contract in Bavaria.
The article notes that Alaba is looking for a deal worth ‘£18m a year’. But Bayern chiefs are hesitant to agree, believing the figure is ‘too much’.
With just 12 months remaining on his current deal, Alaba may be sold on the cheap this summer to avoid losing him for free.
And that potential scenario is backed up by the player’s agent reportedly “threatening the scenario of a free transfer”.
Guardiola worked with Alaba during his stint in the Bundesliga, adding further weight to the possibility of a swoop.
City agree deal for Sane replacement
Meanwhile, Man City have reportedly concluded their search to find a replacement for Leroy Sane.
City recently said goodbye to Sane, as the winger returned to Germany to join Bayern Munich. But with their Champions League ban overturned, they have quickly shifted focus to attracting a replacement.
The player it appears they are about to sign has been in demand for several months. Valencia’s Ferran Torres made 34 appearances in the recently completed La Liga season, and has attracted interest from Liverpool and Manchester United.
The latter had reportedly identified Torres as a cheaper alternative to Jadon Sancho. However, their rivals have stolen a march on them.
