John Barnes explains why Liverpool didn’t need to sign Kostas Tsimikas

Liverpool legend John Barnes is glad to see Jurgen Klopp adding depth to his squad, but thinks they still could have coped without signing Kostas Tsimikas.

Tsimikas recently became Liverpool’s first signing as Premier League champions. The left-back arrived from Olympiacos in a deal worth £11.75m.

Just before the move became official, TEAMtalk gained an exclusive insight into the process behind the deal.

Tsimikas will provide much-needed depth at Anfield. Andy Robertson was their only natural left-back last season. And while his form made him virtually undroppable anyway, Liverpool needed cover just in case.

However, Barnes still thinks Liverpool already had enough depth in that position. The former England international has explained why he thinks they had three players capable of covering for Robertson.

Noentheless, he is pleased to see his old side strengthening anyway.

Speaking exclusively to BonusCodeBets, Barnes said: “It is a good thing to see that Liverpool are signing players, after completing the Kostas Tsimikas deal from Olympiacos.

“I wasn’t worried about signing someone as cover for Andy Robertson though, because we have James Milner, Neco Williams and even Trent Alexander-Arnold who can play there, but it is good to add depth to the squad.

“I don’t see Liverpool making any £70-80 million signings, but it is always good to get more numbers into the squad, which is what Liverpool have done with this signing.”

Liverpool open Thiago talks?

Thiago-Bayern-Munich

Barnes may have claimed that Liverpool will not be spending big this summer. However, they have been heavily linked with one investment that could cost them up to €40m.

That player, of course, is Thiago Alcantara. The Spanish midfielder seems destined to leave Bayern Munich this summer.

There have been conflicting reports so far about Liverpool’s interest in the player. But it emerged on Thursday that Reds sporting director Michael Edwards has now opened formal talks.
