Germany’s Nation Team Director Oliver Bierhoff hopes Thomas Tuchel’s influence at Chelsea can bring the best out of his nation’s players.
Tuchel arrived at Stamford Bridge on January 26 after replacing Frank Lampard in the hot seat. The German coach has had little time to adjust, with games coming thick and fast since his appointment.
And it has been a decent start for the former Paris Saint-German tactician. He has overseen two wins a draw to lift the Blues into sixth place in the table. A top-four finish will be the aim and that is now a possibility with Liverpool’s challenge fading.
Lampard paid the price for a poor run of results. His big players did not seem to be clicking and the writing was on the wall for the club legend.
Timo Werner was a big-money summer signing who arrived with huge expectations. He had scored goals for fun during his final season with RB Leipzig.
The 24-year-old bagged 28 in the Bundesliga and 34 in all competitions to spark Chelsea’s interest. However, he has managed just four in the top flight and five others elsewhere in 2020-2021.
Kai Havertz has also failed to shine since his summer move from Bayer Leverkusen. And Bierhoff, who played 70 timed for Germany, feels Tuchel is the man to set them on the right path.
“I was happy about his move,” he told SportBILD (via Sport Witness). “That is not directed against Frank Lampard; it’s because I really appreciate Thomas Tuchel and have always heard a lot of positive things about him from our players.
“He has repeatedly proven that he can make players better. I am sure that he will mobilize the quality and strength of our German players at Chelsea.
“Under Tuchel you will get even more stability and stability to assert yourself in the Premier League.”
Mount earns Tuchel praise
It remains to be seen if Werner and Havertz do find their form under the new boss. One player who has the world at his feet is England’s Mason Mount.
His form has dipped slightly this season as well but Tuchel believes he can aim for the stars.
“I cannot tell you where the limit is and I don’t want to put a limit on his development,” he said. “It is obvious he has a lot of potential. He is a great soccerer and super nice guy, eager to learn, hungry to win, open-minded and for that I think that for him, he can perform for any manager.”
