Forget Alisson: £120k-p/w LFC talisman also let Klopp down in poor City display – opinion

Once again, Liverpool fell to defeat at Anfield. The reigning Premier League champions were no match for the title-hungry Manchester City, who put four goals past their top flight competition.

Aside from a Sadio Mane header in the first half and Mohamed Salah’s penalty, the Reds didn’t look like getting anything past Ederson in the City goal. At the opposite end of the pitch, fellow Brazilian Alisson made two huge errors which gifted Ilkay Gundogan and Raheem Sterling goals just after the hour mark.

Undoubtedly, Alisson’s mistakes hugely cost Liverpool tonight, but he wasn’t the only player in red to put in a lacklustre performance.

Jordan Henderson was disappointing for Liverpool

Amid their current injury crisis at the back, Liverpool have been forced to improvise when it comes to fielding their defence. Jurgen Klopp has featured the likes of Nat Phillips and Rhys Williams at centre-back this season, along with natural midfielders Fabinho and Jordan Henderson.

With Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip all out with injuries, options are somewhat limited at Anfield. Skipper Henderson has stepped up to the plate and filled in as a centre-half, but tonight, his efforts weren’t good enough.

The £120,000 per week captain struggled to hold up Man City’s sharp attack. According to Sofascore, Henderson was dribbled past on two occasions, which only highlights how clinical Guardiola’s forwards were and how Liverpool were outsmarted.

Additionally, the makeshift centre-back made just two interceptions compared to his four against Brighton. Henderson also lost possession more times than last time and made less accurate passes, with less touches as well.

Whilst the finger cannot be pointed fully at the skipper, the Reds were ultimately schooled by a very comfortable looking Man City side. They are now a hefty ten points behind the Cityzens and just one ahead of West Ham who lurk in fifth place, eyeing up a Champions League spot.

Liverpool’s focus now shifts to facing Leicester City next Saturday, which will be another tough match for the title holders.
