Bayern Munich boss Hansi Flick says he would “totally understand” if reported Liverpool target Thiago Alcantara wants to try his hand at Premier League soccer.
The Spain international is a serial winner of silverware, having played key roles at Barcelona and Bayern. Indeed, he won the Champions League at Barca as well as several league titles with both clubs.
However, having entered the final year of his current deal at Bayern, he has refused an extension. The refusal comes amid claims Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is a keen admirer of the player.
The latest reports, in fact, claim the feeling is mutual and Thiago is gearing up for a move to Anfield.
Speaking to Sport1 (via the Daily Mirror), Flick admitted it would be a “shame” to see a player of his quality leave.
“I can understand when a player is concerned,” the manager said. “Thiago played in Spain for FC Barcelona and in the Bundesliga for FC Bayern Munich.
“If he wants to try again in the Premier League now, I totally understand. But it would be a shame because Thiago gives our game that certain something.
“That’s why I would like to have him as a coach on the team for the next few years, but that’s life. It would go on.”
Thiago arrived at Bayern shortly after former boss Jupp Heynckes guided the club to an illustrious treble. The German champions are on course to do the same this season, having also won a record 20th German Cup.
FLICK FOCUSED ON TREBLE GLORY
Flick insisted that he is solely focused on achieving the feat after a turbulent season for his side, when asked if it would be the perfect send-off for Thiago.
“I have this feeling with every single member of the team,” he said.
“After the double, everyone is really hot and motivated to hit everything in them again in the next few weeks.”
Flick added that he does not want to discuss the player’s future amid their quest for further glory.
!I’ll discuss the squad planning with Hasan Salihamidzic and his team. We are in close contact,” he said.
“Currently the focus is only on the Champions League. I therefore do not want to submit any water level reports.”
