Aston Villa should have landed 6 ft 3 powerhouse who embarrassed Di Maria in 2019 – opinion

Aston Villa should have signed Galatasaray powerhouse Christian Luyindama in the summer transfer window.

What was the story?

According to Turkish publication Fotomac, the 26-year-old wanted to make the move to Villa instead of fellow Premier League side West Ham.

With Bjorn Engels continuing to be troubled with injury issues, a new centre-half would have been a shrewd addition to Dean Smith’s side, and when you look at Luyindama’s performances with the Turkish giants, then you can see exactly why.

Solid as a rock

Standing at 6 foot 3, Luyindama cuts an imposing figure, and his performance in the Champions League last season against PSG showed exactly the kind of calibre of player that he is.

Playing on the right-hand side of a back-three, the DR Congo international came up against Angel Di Maria, and he made the former Manchester United star look silly.

As per Sofascore, Luyindama made a whopping six tackles over the course of the game, three times as many as the man in second for Galatasaray. Add to that the fact he made another team-high of five clearances and eight duels won, and it was a dominant display from the centre-back.

Di Maria on the other other hand, looked like he didn’t know what happened. He finished the match with the lowest rating of any starter for either side, losing possession 20 times before eventually being hooked for Ander Herrera in the second half.

Villa could have signed a real behemoth in Luyindama, and would have really strengthened Smith’s centre-back options.
