Liverpool remain in the hunt for Nuno Mendes, according to reports – but are willing to drop their interest if his price tag soars.
The Premier League champions have been linked with the Sporting full-back for a few months. Mendes only made his senior debut earlier this year, but has since become a mainstay in the Sporting lineup.
The Portuguese club know his potential has put him on the radar of several clubs of Liverpool’s stature. Hence, they have been trying to negotiate a new contract for the teenager.
If agreed, that would be his second new deal of 2020. Sporting feel it is a necessary step to keep him away from bigger clubs.
But according to A Bola, there have been delays in negotiations for the new contract. The newspaper, via Sport Witness, claims Liverpool are still interested in Mendes.
With that in mind, his agent is yet to meet with Sporting to discuss new terms. The club want to make sure they do enter those talks before the end of the calendar year.
Sporting’s plan is to secure a new deal for Mendes that would increase his release clause, which currently stands at €45m.
The intention is to ward off potential suitors, and it appears it would have that effect on Liverpool. The report states that the Reds would “back out” of the race to sign him if that clause rises.
There is no agreement yet, though, so there could still be a chance for Liverpool to pounce for the versatile defender should they still desire him.
Leicester linked with Mendes
Liverpool are not the only club to be linked with Mendes recently. Recent reports suggested Leicester could launch their own effort to sign the player.
The Foxes sold Ben Chilwell to Chelsea in the summer, signing the versatile Timothy Castagne as a replacement. However, injuries have shown them they need extra depth in the full-back areas.
What’s more, it was even suggested that they could sign him for a cut-price fee if Sporting are in need of raising funds – even if their plans to drive Mendes’ price up suggest a different strategy.
