21x possession lost: £70k-p/w Spurs liability was up to his pathetic old tricks again – opinion

Tottenham Hotspur’s unbeaten run came to a shocking end as they let slip of their Group J lead in the Europa League this evening.

A defensive lapse from Ben Davies and then Davinson Sanchez allowed Royal Antwerp striker Lior Refaelov to fire past Hugo Lloris in the 29th minute.

Jose Mourinho’s men were uncharacteristically flat, void of ideas and rather lacklustre but usual defensive mistakes continue to be their main Achilles heel.

Plenty will fire criticism at the aforementioned duo for their role in the only goal of the game, though one name shouldn’t escape the question marks as he was up to his old diabolical tricks once again.

Serge Aurier was thrown in at right-back despite being dropped for their Monday night game at Burnley and that decision now looks a little baffling given just how well Matt Doherty played in keeping a clean sheet.

Per SofaScore, the 27-year-old lost possession 21 times, made just 14% of seven crossing attempts, was dribbled past once and only notched a passing accuracy rate of 76%.

The Ivorian, who is often lambasted for being the “liability” in this side, was not only sloppy in possession but also rather wasteful – it’s no wonder the north Londoners couldn’t score when only one cross was accurate all game.

Once again, he was found failing to trackback to do his defensive duties.

Valued at €20m (£18m) by CIES soccer Observatory, Aurier very nearly departed the club during the summer window with both Bayer Leverkusen and AC Milan keen on his services, as per Sky Sports.

After that pathetic display, Mourinho is probably wishing the £70k-per-week was long gone. Spurs are yet to keep a clean sheet with Aurier in the starting lineup this season, coincidence?

Five players were culled before the hour mark, including Giovani Lo Celso and Gareth Bale but perhaps with Doherty on the bench, Mourinho should have made the change at right-back instead.

AND in other news, Tackle-hungry “HUGE talent” could become Mourinho’s next Makelele…
